Number of bankruptcies increased, possibly due to the end of wage support

The number of bankruptcies rose sharply in November. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reported on Monday that 166 bankruptcies were pronounced last month, the largest number per month this year.
The number of bankruptcies is still a lot smaller than before the corona crisis. The government’s corona support keeps companies afloat and judges are less likely to let companies go bankrupt, as long as they are healthy at the core.
In October, the wage support for entrepreneurs expired. According to the CBS, this may have led to an increase in the number of bankruptcies in November. “It wouldn’t be a strange statement,” says chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen of CBS.
According to him, it is “careful” to draw conclusions based on one monthly figure. Due to the corona measures, companies can again apply for wage support for the months of November and December.
Relatively speaking, most bankruptcies were pronounced in November in the construction sector. In absolute numbers, trade leads the way, but this is an industry with many different companies.
